A blog on how to look at the general conversion 4 traditional styles of Marketing / Sales methods.

Through experience and reference here is a rough chart for mapping (or better yet thinking about) how your marketing efforts (online or off) translate to conversions or closes.

I recently finished an Internet Marketing course that discussed the following type of leads and their rate of conversion: Direct or Referral leads, Networked or “Elbow-Greesed” leads, Advertised leads, & Cold-Call leads.

The proverbial “Word of Mouth Rule” does just that, it rules! Consider any product or service that you yourself have been interested in, chances are you consulted someone (a real human) that you trusted for advice on it. Whether your mind was made up in one direction or another, you probably sought out advice to affirm or deny that decision. Word of Mouth in the world of web marketing translates to “direct traffic” or referral traffic”. According to industry standards these close at a very high rate, in this case let’s say at 80%.

Next we have Networked leads aka “Elbow Greesed”… call it whatever you want, but anyone that’s been in business of any kind long enough, knows the value of rubbing elbows with the right people. Maybe it’s through Social Media – Blogging or being featured in a blog, through Facebook or Twitter, or even via non-virtual networks like industry conferences/seminars or podcasts. Regardless of the type of network vehicle, networking is essential for getting traffic over. Now this can also be argued to be referral traffic, and analytically (web tracking and measurement) speaking it is referral, but for the sake of this conversation we are calling it networked leads as opposed to the above discussed Word of Mouth Referrals. These are understood to close at a rate of 50%.

Social Networks act as facilitators of our simulated self’s online. Not a virtual identity, but an extension of our real identities. So what happens when we extend our personal lives into a scope that may leave us visible in ways we’d never sign-up for to begin with?

Foursquare Security breach unlocked by proactive hacker: Foursquare Safety Issues?

Foursquare is one of the more controversial social networks available, as many don’t want people knowing where they are at any given time. Those fears have gotten real as hacker Jesper Andersen revealed a security breach with the Foursquare website. This hole allowed him to snag data from 70 percent of all check-ins in the San Francisco area over the last three weeks.  That adds up to around 875,000 check-ins.  Wired explains how Andersen’s hack worked:

Phonedog.com reports that Jesper Anderson revealed a breach in Foursquare’s infrastructure allowing him access to nearly 1 million check-ins within the San Francisco Bay Area’s Ferry Building location. Foursquare has since addressed the issue, but the concerns that a circumstance such as this evokes with a technology that already has some on the fritz is quite prominent.

Similarly, there was a recent scare that took place with an Indiana couple involving the use of Facebook. Now this is a very different concern then the one mentioned above, but far more starting as far as the consequential results: Facebook Robbery by Status Update

As CNN reports the couple made a status update on Facebook regarding attending a local concert, only to have one of their Facebook “friends” use the opportunity to rob their home while they were out. Since social media (and it’s web vehicles such as Facebook, Foursquare, Gowalla, Geo-tagged Tweets, etc) is  representation of “the real world”, such occurrences shouldn’t come as a surprise. These networks are simply tools, how we use them depends on the motive.

A Quick Copy Writing, Ad Copy, or Headline Writing Practice

Richard Kaulfers, a “virtual-friend” of mine from the www.internetmarketingclub.org professional network for web marketers, recently posted a video on Digital Swiping for Copy-writing, Ad copy, Headline writing, etc…

Richard discusses some pretty basic, but very useful tactics for resourceful copy-writing. One of the general lessons that came out of this piece for me, is the limitless space of information/resource we know as the internet. This tactic of Digital Swiping is more than just internet marketing methodology, it’s essentially a viable approach in nearly any facet of e-business, I mean really, its something that stretches beyond the internet itself and to the respective cores of utility and innovation as we have come to know them. The reason governments keep their military secrets “classified” is because “a good idea doesn’t give a damn about who has it”, and normally those that have it, excel!

In this sense, copy-writing is a microcosmic sample of how we can learn from what others are successfully doing on the internet; marketing or otherwise. Whether you are looking for pointers on good Headline writing practices, or how to generally entice your readers with well worded phrases throughout your ad copy, and/or just where to look for them, and how to best “swipe” them up!

Some good information on how to write Headlines can be found in http://www.copyblogger.com/how-to-write-headlines-that-work/ Another great resource is: http://www.copywriting.com/blog/. No I am not an affiliate tying to make a buck, from time to time I like to relay honest wholesome info to people!

Ok so I guess if you really wanted to , you could make an argument for ad copy or headline mimicking as being stealing, but I think  and as the military example above proves, this is only the nature of competition on any plane.

In sports, when one coach or manager finds a new pattern or new way of thinking about competitive strategy on the court or field that proves to work, others begin innately replicating it. So to those of you who may be inclined to initially claim this to be fraud, I say, “Open them eyes boys”, I love original creativity too, but perhaps that’s why its so great, it’s very rare to find because the rest of the world is just copy what works!

Just finished completing USF’s Master’s Certificate in Internet Marketing. I’ve dabbled here and there on blogs, but I’ve decided to consolidate my work here. Since absolutely nobody cares about any of this but me, let’s get to the topics that matter, shall we?

Take Care,
