Yahoo Never a Search Company?

Finally defeated by Relevancy? Or is that just Irrelevant?

A blog about an Email and Search company turned community hub-spot, and how simple rectangle will always rule search by itself.

What is Yahoo if not a search engine? In my inexperienced whimsical mind, Yahoo’s greatest reason for prominence in the internet world has been its email and Aol-style “Home-base” brand services. I suppose models such as these eventually allowed what we now call Web 2.0 to develop.

Becoming a hub for email was key to many of the early internet Mongols, Yahoo certainly made their name there and built on that reputation with a continued effort to cater to entertaining their email clientele.

As many of us know on the client side, if it aint broke don’t fix it – excusing the slang, the point here is once we find something that works [and for free at that] it becomes second nature. As long as it continues to solve our problems while remaining cutting edge, our loyalty probably wont be tested.

Now maybe that rule doesn’t apply to all verticals, and it certainly isn’t the same for modern products/services as it was for some of the earlier “wild-wild-west” types (as far as competition and user expectations being factors), but the “Mongols” are still “Mongoling” on because of this dynamic. I wonder how many have Yahoo.com set as their browser homepage?

To their credit ventures such as Yahoo Sports and Entertainment News among other popular media coverage have grown into reputable and serious competitors in their respective spaces. Yahoo Answers is a strong and very useful tool that has propelled Yahoo atop Search Engine rankings across virtually any user question topic you can think up. Lastly, community based communication tools such as Messenger (used by those who never even visit yahoo.com) and features such as Personals are what make this place a real community hub!

What started as a search company has become a hub for communication and a symbol for breaking information. Now this shouldn’t be taken as a criticism of Yahoo’s inability to search, but as a compliment to their versatility of community services. However if you did want to find the best discourse on the net of those critical of Yahoo’s lack of search-ability, I’d recommend plugging that query into Google! :)

At the end of the day, relevancy will always win, that’s how a simple rectangular box can defeat one of the web’s (if not the web’s number one) original and elite web 2.0 “swiss army type” community service centers when it comes to search.

Conclusively, Yahoo’s success and it’s greatest features/services supplement it’s search engine abilities, not the other way around!

Until Next Time,

Mikey
